Frequently asked questions

Why are two visits needed?

Most products do not kill bed bug eggs. A second visit treats the young bugs after they hatch, before they can breed.

Do I need to throw away my mattress?

Usually not. Mattresses can often be treated and covered with an encasement. We advise if an item is too badly infested.

Do you treat hostels and guest houses?

Yes. For multi-room buildings we plan room-by-room inspection and treatment and keep written records. See institutional pest management.

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs (khatmal) are small, flat, wingless insects that feed on human blood, usually at night. Adults are reddish-brown and about the size of an apple seed; young bugs are smaller and paler. They spread by travelling in luggage, furniture and bedding.

Signs of bed bugs

  • Itchy bites, often in a line or cluster on arms, neck or legs.
  • Small dark spots (droppings) on mattress seams, bed joints and walls.
  • Live bugs, pale eggs or shed skins in cracks of beds, sofas and skirting.
  • A sweet, musty smell in heavy infestations.

Life cycle

Life cycle of the bed bug
  1. EggAbout 1 mm, pale, glued in cracks and seams. Hatch in about 6–10 days.
  2. Nymph (5 stages)Pale and smaller than adults. Needs a blood meal before each moult.
  3. AdultReddish-brown, apple-seed size. Can live for months between feeds.

Egg to adult takes about 5–8 weeks at room temperature. Most treatments do not kill eggs, so a second visit after 10–14 days treats the newly hatched nymphs.

Risks

Bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, but bites cause itching, skin irritation and sleepless nights. Infestations cause stress and can spread to neighbouring rooms in hostels, hotels and flats.

How infestations start

  • Travel and staying in infested accommodation.
  • Second-hand beds, mattresses and sofas.
  • Visitors' luggage, and movement between rooms in hostels and guest houses.

Inspection and preparation

We inspect beds, mattresses, sofas, curtains, wardrobes, skirting and wall cracks, and give you a preparation checklist. Preparation is essential: bedding and clothes are washed and dried on the hottest suitable setting, clutter is reduced, and furniture is pulled away from walls.

Treatment plan

  1. Treat hiding places

Targeted treatment of bed frames, mattress seams, furniture joints, cracks and skirting with suitable products.

  2. Non-chemical measures

Vacuuming, laundering, mattress encasements and removal of badly infested items where needed.

  3. Follow-up visit

Usually after 10–14 days, to treat young bugs that hatch from eggs.

  4. Check

We confirm with you whether bites and signs have stopped.

Bed bug treatment usually needs two or more visits. Results also depend on preparation and on stopping re-introduction from luggage or neighbouring rooms.

Prevention

  • Inspect luggage after travel.
  • Check second-hand furniture carefully before bringing it home.
  • Use light-coloured bedding so early signs are easy to see.
  • Report early signs quickly; small infestations are easier to treat.

Safety precautions

  • Mattresses and bedding are only used again after the time we specify for the product applied.
  • Treatment of cots and infant bedding is planned separately with extra precautions.
  • Products are chosen for the target pest and the place being treated, and must be registered or otherwise legally authorised in Pakistan for that use.
  • Every application follows the manufacturer's label: dose, method, site and precautions.
  • Our team wears protective equipment suited to the product and the task.
  • Food, drinking water, utensils, toys, animal feed and aquariums are removed or covered before treatment.
  • Children, pets and other occupants follow the precautions we give for that specific treatment.
  • Re-entry time depends on the product, formulation, ventilation and surface. We tell you on the day, rather than using one fixed time for every job.
  • You receive written post-treatment instructions.

Standards we work to: the WHO guidance on pesticide use for vector and public health pest control, the FAO/WHO International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management, the WHO hazard classification of pesticides, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles, together with Pakistan’s pesticide law.
