Termite

Local name: Deemak

How to identify: Pale, soft, ant-sized insects with no narrow waist and straight, bead-like antennae; they avoid light. You usually see mud tubes or damaged wood, not the termites.
Where you find it: Soil under houses, door frames, cupboards, wooden floors.
Risk: Damage to wood and property; no direct health risk.

Cockroach

Local name: Lal baig

How to identify: Brown, flat, fast-running insects, mostly at night. German cockroaches are small and light brown; American are large and reddish.
Where you find it: Kitchens, drains, motor rooms, behind fridges.
Risk: Carry germs that cause diarrhoea and food poisoning; trigger allergies and asthma.

Bed bug

Local name: Khatmal

How to identify: Flat, reddish-brown, apple-seed sized. Feed on blood at night.
Where you find it: Mattress seams, bed joints, sofas, wall cracks.
Risk: Itchy bites and poor sleep; not known to spread disease.

Local name: Chooha

How to identify: Rats are large with thick tails; mice are small. Droppings and gnaw marks are the usual signs.
Where you find it: Stores, kitchens, drains, roofs, false ceilings.
Risk: Contaminate food; can spread leptospirosis and other diseases; damage wiring.

Dengue mosquito (Aedes)

How to identify: Black with white stripes on body and legs. Bites in daytime, early morning and evening.
Where you find it: Clean stored water: coolers, tanks, pots, tyres.
Risk: Spreads dengue fever.

Malaria mosquito (Anopheles)

ملیریا مچھر

Local name: Machhar

How to identify: Rests at an angle with its tail up. Bites at night, mostly indoors.
Where you find it: Standing water: drains, ponds, rice fields.
Risk: Spreads malaria.

Local name: Makhi

How to identify: Grey fly with four dark stripes on its back.
Where you find it: Garbage, manure, drains, animal sheds.
Risk: Carries germs to food; linked to diarrhoea, typhoid and eye infections.

How to identify: Small, flat, eight-legged; swells after feeding.
Where you find it: On cattle, goats and sheep; cracks in sheds and walls.
Risk: Hyalomma ticks spread Congo fever (CCHF).

Local name: Sandfly

How to identify: Tiny, hairy, sand-coloured fly that hops rather than flies far. Bites at dusk and night.
Where you find it: Wall cracks, animal shelters, rubble.
Risk: Spreads cutaneous leishmaniasis (long-lasting skin sores).
